Wellston is a small community in Michigan, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community and a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town, but the government counts its population.
Wellston is located in Manistee County, within Norman Township. In 2020, about 254 people lived there. It's found inside the Manistee National Forest. You can find it south of M-55, a main road. It's about 21 miles east of Manistee and 29 miles west of Cadillac. Wellston has its own post office with the ZIP code 49689.
History of Wellston
Wellston got its name from its very first postmaster, a person named Adelmer J. Wells. The post office officially opened on June 30, 1892.
The town was started by a company called the Swigart Land Company. It was built along the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad, which was a train track. Wellston is also home to a special place called Little Mary's Hospitality House. This house helps children who are very sick and their families. It was started in 1982.
Geography and Lakes
Wellston is located in the southeastern part of Manistee County. It's also near the middle of Norman Township. The community covers an area of about 1.01 square miles. Most of this area is land, but about 0.04 square miles is water.
Two small lakes are found within the Wellston area. These are Crystal Lake and Cranberry Lake. The main highway, M-55, runs along the northern edge of the community.
