The Walwal Incident: A Spark for War

In the 1930s, Welwel (then called Walwal) became the center of a serious disagreement between Ethiopia and Italy. This disagreement was about where the border between their territories should be. A "border dispute" happens when two countries don't agree on exactly where their land ends and another country's land begins.

How the Dispute Began

In November 1934, Italian and Ethiopian forces clashed at Walwal. Both sides claimed the oasis was part of their territory. This conflict led to fighting and casualties.

Mussolini's Role in the Conflict

Mussolini was the leader of Italy at the time. He was a powerful ruler who wanted Italy to become a much bigger and stronger empire. Mussolini used the border dispute at Walwal as an excuse. He claimed that Ethiopia had attacked Italy, even though the situation was much more complicated. He used this incident to justify his plan to invade Ethiopia.
