The Wendelin Grimm Farmstead is a very old and important farm near Victoria, Minnesota, in the United States. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's a special place worth protecting. This farm is found inside the beautiful Carver Park Reserve.

The Story of Grimm Farm

A New Home in Minnesota

The Grimm family, Wendelin and Julianna, moved from Germany to Carver County, Minnesota, in 1859. Wendelin Grimm worked hard to clear a piece of land. This land was once part of a thick forest called the Big Woods. He started his farm using farming methods he knew from Germany.

The Amazing "Everlasting Clover"

Wendelin Grimm was very good at seed saving. He brought a box of seeds with him from Germany. He called them "everlasting clover." These seeds were actually for a plant called alfalfa. Alfalfa is a plant often grown to feed farm animals.

Growing Strong in Winter

For the next 15 years, Wendelin Grimm carefully chose the alfalfa seeds. He only picked seeds from plants that could survive the very cold Minnesota winters. Because of his hard work, he created the first type of alfalfa in North America that could truly handle winter's chill. This was a huge step for farming!

Grimm Alfalfa Becomes Famous

By 1890, farmers in Carver County were growing over 1,000 acres (about 400 hectares) of this special alfalfa. Wendelin Grimm convinced his neighbors to try his seeds. Around 1895, there were some really tough winters. Most regular alfalfa plants died, but Grimm's alfalfa kept growing strong.

In 1900, two professors, Willet M. Hays and Andrew Boss, visited the farm. They were amazed to see the healthy alfalfa plants in winter. A few years later, Professor Hays became an important person in the United States Department of Agriculture. He officially named the plant "Grimm" alfalfa. This special alfalfa helped create many new types of strong, winter-hardy alfalfa plants.

A Crop That Changed Farming

Grimm alfalfa became incredibly important. Today, it is the source for all modern alfalfa types grown in the United States. This covers about 25 million acres (10 million hectares) of land. That's an area almost as big as the state of Kentucky! This crop is worth about $10 billion every year.

A professor from the University of Minnesota named Lawrence Elling said that Grimm alfalfa was the most important crop discovery in North America. He believed it was even more important than anything else until hybrid corn was invented.

Keeping History Alive

Saving the Farmhouse

In 1962, the Hennepin County Park Reserve District bought the Grimm farm. This group is now called Three Rivers Park District. The farm was no longer used for farming, so the old farmhouse started to fall apart. Trees began to grow where animals used to graze.

In 1993, the Minnesota Historical Society realized that many old farm sites were being lost. They decided the Grimm farm was very important to save. The state worked to stop the farmhouse from decaying further. They fixed the roof, secured the windows and doors, and repaired the foundation.

A Place to Learn

From 1998 to 2001, the inside of the farmhouse was carefully restored. On October 6, 2001, everyone celebrated the completion with an open house.

Today, the Grimm Farm Historic Site is part of Carver Park Reserve. It is open to the public for special events and educational programs. It's a great place to learn about farming history and the amazing story of Wendelin Grimm's alfalfa!
