Wendell Hudson (born April 16, 1951) is a retired American basketball player and coach. He is also a former Associate Athletics Director for Alumni Relations. He made history at the University of Alabama. In 1969, Hudson became the first African-American athlete to receive a scholarship in any sport at the university. This was a very important step for the school.

A Trailblazing Player
Wendell Hudson was a star player for the Alabama Crimson Tide men's team. He played from 1969 to 1973. His skills on the court were amazing. In 1973, he was named the SEC Player of the Year by the Associated Press. This is a huge honor for a college basketball player.
Jersey Retirement
To show how important he was, the Alabama men's basketball team retired his number 20 jersey. This happened on February 17, 2020. Wendell Hudson is the first and only player to have his jersey number retired by the program. This means no other player on the team will ever wear the number 20 again. It is a special way to remember his legacy.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Wendell Hudson became a basketball coach. He worked as an assistant coach for several college teams. These included Alabama, North Alabama, Rice, Ole Miss, and Baylor.
Leading the Crimson Tide Women
From 2008 to 2013, Hudson was the head coach for the Alabama women's basketball team. He led the team for five seasons. On April 22, 2013, he stepped down from his coaching role. After coaching, he continued to work in an administrative role for the athletic department.
