Wendy Beetlestone was born in 1961. She is a very important person in the American legal system. She works as a U.S. federal judge in a court called the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Early Life and Education

Wendy Beetlestone was born in Ibadan, Nigeria, in 1961. Her father was a chemistry professor from Britain. Her mother was from America. Wendy went to school in Nigeria first. Then, she studied in Yorkshire, England.

In 1984, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Liverpool. Later, in 1993, she got her law degree. This degree is called a Juris Doctor (JD). She earned it from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

Her Career Path

Wendy Beetlestone started her legal career in 1993. She worked as a law clerk, helping a judge. After that, she joined a law firm named Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis, LLP. She became a partner there in 2001. This means she became one of the main leaders of the firm.

From 2002 to 2005, she was the head lawyer for the School District of Philadelphia. Then, she worked at another law firm from 2005 to 2014. Here, she handled many different types of business legal cases. She worked in both federal and state courts.

Becoming a Judge

On June 16, 2014, President Barack Obama chose Wendy Beetlestone to become a U.S. district judge. She would take the place of Judge Michael Baylson.

A special meeting was held in July 2014 to talk about her nomination. In September, a group of senators approved her. In November 2014, the United States Senate voted to approve her. She officially became a judge on November 21, 2014.

Chancellor of the University of Liverpool

In 2023, Wendy Beetlestone was chosen for a very important role. She became the Chancellor of the University of Liverpool. This is a big leadership position at the university. She is the eleventh person to hold this job. She is also the first woman and the first Black person to be the Chancellor of the University of Liverpool.

Important Court Decisions

On December 15, 2017, Judge Beetlestone made an important court order. This order stopped new rules across the country. These rules would have allowed employers to refuse to cover certain health care services. Employers could do this if they had strong personal beliefs against those services. Judge Beetlestone believed these rules would greatly affect women's lives.

She made a second similar order when new rules were created. However, on July 8, 2020, a higher court disagreed with her. The Supreme Court of the United States overturned her decisions. This means the Supreme Court decided her rulings were not correct.
