Wenlou Tang bao facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Wenlou Tang bao (simplified Chinese: 文楼汤包; traditional Chinese: 文樓湯包; pinyin: Wénlóu Tāng Bāo) is a super big and yummy soup dumpling from a place called Wenlou in Huai'an, Jiangsu, China. People who live there sometimes call it "crab roe tangbao" because of its special filling. It's a famous dish from a style of cooking known as Huaiyang cuisine.

What Makes Wenlou Tang Bao Special?

Wenlou Tang bao first appeared a long time ago, during the rule of the Daoguang Emperor in the Qing dynasty. This was a powerful empire in China's history. This special dumpling has three amazing things about it:

Its Size and Wrapper

First, it's really, really big! Even though it's huge, its outer wrapper is super thin. It's so thin, it almost looks like paper!

Delicious Filling

Second, the inside of the dumpling is filled with many tasty ingredients. Imagine a mix of meat, chicken, crab roe (which is like tiny crab eggs), and even shrimp! All these yummy things make the soup inside extra flavorful.

How It's Made

Third, the way it's made is very unique. The soup that goes inside the dumpling is first made solid, like a jelly. This solid soup is then placed inside the thin wrapper. Finally, the dumpling is steamed until it's perfectly cooked and the solid soup turns back into a warm, delicious liquid.

The History of Wenlou Tang Bao

The place called Wenlou was built in Chuzhou District in 1828. In the past, smart writers and scholars often met there. You could also see beautiful views from Wenlou, which is how it got its name.

From Teahouse to Famous Dumplings

When Wenlou first opened, it wasn't famous for its soup dumplings. It was mostly a teahouse that sold only a few simple foods. But in the autumn, when crabs were easy to find, Wenlou started making and selling its special crab roe tang bao.

A Royal Taste Test

It is said that the Daoguang Emperor himself tried Wenlou Tang bao. He loved it so much that he called it "the most fresh in China"! This made the dumpling even more famous.

Liked by Leaders

Later, a very important Chinese leader named Zhou Enlai was also very impressed by it. In 1964, when Zhou Enlai met with leaders from Huai'an, he even asked about how the Wenlou Tang bao business was doing. This shows how well-known and loved this dumpling was!

Official Recognition

According to local news, in 1997, the China Cuisine Association officially named Wenlou Tang bao one of the "Famous Snacks in China." Then, in 2002, Wenlou Tang bao even got a patent, which means its unique recipe and name were legally protected.
