Wenonah Park is a cool park right in the middle of Bay County, Michigan. It's about 6.1 acres big, which is like having several football fields! You can find it along the east bank of the Saginaw River in Bay City, Michigan, United States. The park is famous for its big outdoor stage, called an amphitheater. Right across the river, there's another city park called Veterans Memorial Park.
A Look Back at Wenonah Park
Wenonah Park first opened its doors in 1908. It was built at the same time as the Wenonah Hotel, which is now a DoubleTree by Hilton hotel. The idea was to give the hotel guests a beautiful view of the Saginaw River. Both the park and the hotel officially opened on November 9, 1908.
After the hotel opened, work continued to fully develop the park and build its main stage. This whole project was a big deal for Bay City! The hotel cost over $300,000 back then, and the park's stage was estimated to cost $50,000. The people of Bay City helped make it happen by approving $200,000 in special bonds. These bonds helped buy the land along the river and turn it into the public park we see today.
What Makes Wenonah Park Special?
The most important part of Wenonah Park is its outdoor stage, known as The World Friendship Shell. It's decorated with a large, cool oval sculpture and a water fountain. There's also a special dock along the seawall where boats of different sizes can park. It's a great spot to watch the boats go by on the river!
Fun Events at Wenonah Park
Many exciting community events happen at Wenonah Park throughout the year. You can enjoy concerts and different arts performances. The park also hosts the big Bay City Fireworks Festival in the summer. In November, families gather for the Festival of Lights, which brings a lot of sparkle to the park.
