Werra-Meißner is a Kreis, or district, located in the northern part of Hesse, Germany. This area is famous for its beautiful natural landscapes. The district gets its name from two important local features: the Werra River and the Hohe Meißner mountain.

How Werra-Meißner Was Formed

The Werra-Meißner district was created in 1974. It was formed by joining two older districts: Eschwege and Witzenhausen. These two districts had existed for a long time, since 1821, with only small changes over the years.

Exploring Werra-Meißner's Geography

The most important river flowing through the district is the Werra. This river is a key part of the local landscape.

The Hohe Meißner Mountain

The Hohe Meißner is the highest peak in the Meißner mountain range. It stands tall at 754 m (2,474 ft). Both the Werra River and the Hohe Meißner mountain gave the district its unique name.

For many years, until the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the Hohe Meißner was a special place. It was used by USA military forces. Soldiers were stationed there to guard a listening post located on the hilltop.
