Wertsville is a small, unincorporated community in East Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It is located along County Route 602, also known as Wertsville Road. An "unincorporated community" is a place that doesn't have its own local government, but is part of a larger township.
History of Wertsville
Wertsville got its name from the Werts family, who lived there a long time ago. People used to call it "Werts' Corners."
By the year 1881, Wertsville was a busy little place. It had a school where children learned, a Baptist church for worship, and a post office. There was also a general store, a shoemaker's shop, and a wagon shop.
Wertsville Historic District
The Wertsville Historic District is a special area that covers about 284 acres. It includes the community along Wertsville and Lindbergh roads. A "historic district" is a group of buildings, sites, or objects that are important because of their history or architecture.
This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 5, 2000. It's important because of its old buildings, its history of trade, and how the community grew over time. There are 31 important buildings in this district that show its history.
Notable Buildings
- The Amwell Baptist Church was built in 1834. It has a style called Greek Revival, which looks like ancient Greek temples. It was updated in 1884 and is now a private home.
- The P.V.D. Manners Store was built in 1883. It has an Italianate style, which often features tall windows and decorative eaves. Today, it's known as Peacock's Country Store.
