What's in a Name? The Story of Wervershoof
The name Wervershoof has a few possible stories. One idea is that it comes from a preacher named Werenfridus. He was a helper of Willibrord. Werenfridus came to this area around the year 690. He later lived on a farm there.
The old church in Wervershoof was named after Saint Werenfridus. A settlement called 'Werfaertshof' was shown on a map in 1288. This might be an early version of the town's name.
How Wervershoof Grew: A Look at Its Population
For a long time, until the early 1800s, Wervershoof was very small. Its population stayed between 250 and 400 people.
Becoming an Independent Municipality
The number of people started to grow after 1817. This was when Wervershoof became an independent municipality. By 1868, nearly 800 people lived there. The municipality then got bigger. It added areas called High and Low Zwaagdijk. After this, the population reached about 1,600 people.
Growth in the 20th Century
The population grew slowly in the early 1900s. But after World War II, it grew much faster. In 40 years, the number of residents went from 2,000 to over 5,000. Other places in the municipality grew more slowly than Wervershoof itself. By January 1, 2010, the town had 8,794 inhabitants.
