West Creek (New Jersey) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

West Creek is a stream about 12.3 miles (19.8 km) long. It flows into Delaware Bay in New Jersey, United States. Think of it as a smaller river that feeds into a bigger body of water.

What is West Creek?

The name "West Creek" comes from an old Native American language called Lenape. The Lenape word "westeconk" means "place of fat meat." This name likely came from the animals found there long ago.

Where Does West Creek Start?

West Creek starts in the swampy areas west of a place called Halberton. This area is in Maurice River Township. From there, it flows south. It passes near Belleplain State Forest.

How Does West Creek Flow?

As West Creek flows south, it used to have a dam at a place called Hoffman's Mill. But that pond is now gone. Further south, there are still two dams. These dams create two ponds: Hands Millpond and Pickle Factory Pond.

After Pickle Factory Pond, West Creek helps form a border. It marks part of the line between Cape May County and Cumberland County. The creek then reaches the tidal marshes. These are wetlands that are affected by ocean tides. It flows past the west side of the Stipson Island peninsula. Near the end of this peninsula, there's an old boat landing. Finally, West Creek empties into Delaware Bay.
