The West Fork Rio Chama: A Colorado River

This river plays an important role in the water system of Archuleta County, Colorado. It helps collect water from the high mountains and carries it downstream. This water eventually reaches much larger rivers.

Where Does It Start?

The West Fork Rio Chama begins its journey in Archuleta County, Colorado. Its source is high up in the mountains. This area is very close to a special line called the "continental divide." The continental divide is like a giant ridge of mountains. It separates which ocean the rain and snow will eventually flow into. Water on one side flows towards the Pacific Ocean. Water on the other side flows towards the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico.

Where Does It Go?

From its starting point, the West Fork Rio Chama flows towards the southeast. It travels through the landscape until it meets another stream. This other stream is known as the East Fork Rio Chama. When these two streams join together, they officially form the main Rio Chama river. This meeting point is also located within Archuleta County, Colorado.
