West Grove is a small, quiet place in western Davis County, Iowa, United States. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. West Grove is located along Iowa Highway 2. It sits west of Bloomfield, which is the main town and county seat for Davis County. West Grove is about 942 feet (287 meters) above sea level.
History of West Grove
West Grove has a simple but interesting history. It was officially planned and set up as a town in the year 1853. This means people decided where streets and buildings would go.
The Post Office Story
For many years, West Grove had its own post office. It first opened on June 21, 1852, and was called the Weeping Willow post office. A few years later, on February 19, 1856, its name was changed to West Grove.
However, the West Grove post office eventually closed. This happened on August 31, 1959. After it closed, all its mail services were handled by the post office in nearby Bloomfield.
West Grove's ZIP Code
Even though West Grove's post office closed a long time ago, the community still has its own special ZIP Code, which is 52537. This is a bit unusual because the ZIP Code system was created several years after West Grove's post office had already joined with Bloomfield's.
