West Liberty, Missouri facts for kids
West Liberty was once a small town in Putnam County, in the state of Missouri, United States. Today, it is known as an extinct town or a "ghost town" because no one lives there anymore. It was located in the southern part of Sherman Township.
West Liberty was first planned and mapped out in 1855. Its original name was simply "Liberty." However, there was already another town named Liberty, Missouri in the state. To avoid confusion, the name was quickly changed to "West Liberty."
A post office was opened in West Liberty in 1855. This post office helped people send and receive mail for many years. It stayed open until 1908. Interestingly, two other nearby post offices, one in Delpha and another in St. John, also closed in the same year, 1908. This suggests that the area might have been changing, with fewer people needing these services.
