Mall History: How It Grew
West Valley Mall has changed a lot since it first opened. Here's a look at some important moments in its past.
Opening Day and Early Stores
When West Valley Mall first opened in 1995, it had two main stores:
- A large Gottschalks department store.
- A big Target store.
In 1996, a 14-screen Cinemark movie theater opened. This was exciting for movie lovers! Also, a JCPenney department store moved into the mall. It had been in a different part of Tracy before.
More Stores Join In
More popular stores joined the mall in 1997:
- Sears opened a large department store.
- Ross Dress for Less opened, offering great deals on clothes.
- Big 5 Sporting Goods opened for sports gear.
In 2002, two more well-known stores arrived:
- A Barnes & Noble bookstore, perfect for finding new books.
- An Old Navy clothing store.
Around this time, other stores like Best Buy and Cost Plus World Market also opened near the mall. In 2005, the Target store got even bigger. It added more space where its garden center used to be.
Changes and New Additions
Over the years, some stores closed, and new ones took their place:
- In 2009, Old Navy closed down. Gottschalks also closed because its company went out of business.
- In 2010, Macy's moved into the space where Gottschalks used to be. This was a big addition to the mall!
More changes happened in the following years:
- Ross Dress for Less moved to a different spot in Tracy in 2012. A local furniture store took its place at the mall.
- Barnes & Noble closed in 2013.
- In 2014, Sports Authority opened in the old Barnes & Noble spot. However, Sports Authority closed just two years later in 2016. A local sports club now uses that space.
Recent Store Closures
The mall has seen a few more changes recently:
- On November 7, 2019, Sears announced it would close its Tracy store. It officially closed in February 2020.
- On June 4, 2020, JCPenney also announced it would close its Tracy store.
Today, Macy's and Target are the main anchor stores that remain at West Valley Mall.
