Oil Discovery and Growth
The Westbrook Oil Field was found on March 5, 1921. This happened when a well called Texas and Pacific Abrams No. 1 was finished. It was drilled very deep, about 2,498 feet into the ground.
Two people, L.W. Sandusky and P.C. Coleman, helped start the drilling. They convinced a company to drill a test well. This first well started being drilled on February 8, 1920.
Later, in December 1922, a company called the California Company bought the property. This company was part of Standard Oil of California. By 1926, the oil field had 77 wells that were producing oil. They produced a total of 3,400 barrels of oil. The oil comes from a type of rock called limestone in the Permian Basin.
