This town is situated on the southern edge of Albany County. You can reach it by using New York State Route 143.

History of Westerlo
Westerlo was officially created in 1815. It was formed from parts of two other towns: Coeymans and Rensselaerville.
The town gets its name from a special person, Reverend Eilardus Westerlo. He was a minister at a church in Albany, New York, from 1760 to 1790.

Westerlo covers a total area of about 58.5 square miles (151.6 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 57.9 square miles (149.7 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.7 square miles (1.9 square kilometers), is water.

- Snyder's Corners – A location northwest of the main Westerlo village area.
- South Westerlo – This hamlet is also near the southern border of the town.
