The Western Highland treefrog (Litoria iris) is a small frog that lives in New Guinea. It's known for its bright colors and unique way of laying eggs.

What Does It Look Like?

These frogs are not very big. Adult male frogs are about 3.6 centimeters long. Female frogs are a little bigger, reaching about 4.3 centimeters.

Their backs can be different colors, but they are usually green. They often have a thick black pattern on their backs. Their legs are orange, and their bellies and sides can show hints of purple and blue.

Life Cycle and Reproduction

Western Highland treefrogs lay their eggs on plants. These plants hang over water, like a pond or stream. This is a clever way to keep the eggs safe until they hatch.

After the eggs are laid, it takes about two weeks for them to hatch. When the tadpoles hatch, they simply fall off the leaf and into the water below. They then continue to grow and develop in the water.
