The western greenbul (Arizelocichla tephrolaema) is a small, lively bird that belongs to the bulbul family. These birds are known for their beautiful songs and are often found in forests. The western greenbul lives mainly in the Cameroonian Highlands forests in Africa.

Meet the Western Greenbul

The western greenbul is a type of passerine bird. This means it's a perching bird, like many songbirds you might see. It's part of the bulbul family, which has many different species. These birds are often hard to spot because they blend in with the green leaves of the forest.

What's in a Name?

The western greenbul has had a few different names over time. Scientists sometimes change a bird's name as they learn more about it. It was first called Trichophorus, then Andropadus, and now it's usually called Arizelocichla. Some experts still use Pycnonotus for it.

This bird also has other common names. People sometimes call it the grey-throated bulbul or grey-throated greenbul. It can also be known as the olive-breasted mountain greenbul or western mountain greenbul. It's important not to confuse it with other birds that have similar names!

Different Types of Western Greenbul

Within the western greenbul species, there are two main groups, called subspecies. These groups are slightly different from each other, often because they live in different areas.

Where Western Greenbuls Live

The western greenbul lives in parts of Africa. You can find them on an island called Bioko. They also live in western Cameroon and nearby Nigeria. These birds like specific types of places to call home.

Their Favorite Places

Western greenbuls prefer areas with lots of trees and plants. Their natural habitats include:

  • Boreal forests: These are cool, northern forests.
  • Subtropical or tropical moist montane forests: These are warm, wet forests found on mountains.
  • Subtropical or tropical dry shrubland: This is an area with dry bushes and shrubs.

They need these different types of forests to find food and build their nests. Their green feathers help them hide among the leaves.
