Westfarms (also called Westfarms Mall) is a big shopping center located about 7 kilometers (4 miles) southwest of Hartford, Connecticut. This mall is special because it sits right on the town line between Farmington and West Hartford. Its name, "Westfarms," comes from these two towns. The Taubman Company built and manages Westfarms. It is the third largest indoor mall in the state of Connecticut.
Westfarms has several main stores, called "anchor stores." These are two Macy's stores, Nordstrom, and JCPenney. There is also one large space that used to be a Lord & Taylor store, but it is now empty.
Westfarms is easy to get to, located on Connecticut Route 71. It's also close to where Interstate 84 and Connecticut Route 9 meet. Both highways have exits near the mall. The area around Westfarms is full of other shopping places. It is surrounded by the towns of West Hartford, Farmington, Newington, and New Britain.
History of Westfarms Mall
Westfarms Mall first opened its doors in October 1974. When it first opened, its main stores were JCPenney, G. Fox, and Sage-Allen. Over the years, some of these stores changed. G. Fox became Filene's in 1993, and then it became a Macy's store in 2006.
In the 1980s, Westfarms was known as one of the best shopping malls in the Northeast United States. As of 2019, the mall has more than 160 different shops. Westfarms offers a wide variety of stores and places to eat. Many of these shops are unique and can only be found in the Hartford area.
Unlike many other large indoor malls, Westfarms does not have a big food court where many restaurants share one seating area. Instead, some parts of the mall have several quick-service restaurants. These restaurants are in their own separate storefronts.
Changes to Anchor Stores
On August 2, 2020, it was announced that the Lord & Taylor store at Westfarms would be closing. This was part of a plan to close 19 of their stores across the country. Later, on August 27, 2020, Lord & Taylor announced they would be closing all of their remaining stores. The Lord & Taylor store at Westfarms officially closed on December 29, 2020.
