Exploring Westlawn-Hillcrest
Westlawn-Hillcrest has two main parts. The older part, called Westlawn, has many tall gravestones. The newer part, called Hillcrest, is like a garden. Here, the gravestones are flat on the ground.
The Westlawn Cemetery first opened in 1910. A company called N. P. Dodge Co. owned it back then.
The Westlawn Mausoleum
The Westlawn mausoleum is a very impressive building. A mausoleum is a building where people are buried above ground. This one was designed by a famous architect named Henry Bacon. He also designed the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.!
The mausoleum was built between 1913 and 1915. It cost a lot of money, over $460,000, which was a huge amount back then. It officially opened on September 12, 1915. The building looks like an ancient Greek or Roman temple. It is made from the same special Colorado-Yule marble as the Lincoln Memorial.
The Singing Tower
In the middle of the Hillcrest part of the cemetery, you can find the Singing Tower. This tower was built in 1931. It has a cool Art Deco style, which was popular at the time.
The Singing Tower was inspired by the famous Bok Tower in Lake Wales, Florida. This tower plays music every day. You can hear its beautiful tunes from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Funeral Home and Crematory
A funeral home is a place where families can gather before a burial or cremation. Westlawn-Hillcrest opened its own funeral home inside the cemetery in 1998. They also have a crematory on site, where cremations are performed.
