Wetsel is a small, quiet place in Collin County, Texas. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own city government. Instead, it's part of the larger Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area, a big region that includes the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth.
A Look Back in Time
Wetsel started as a very small community in the late 1800s. It probably only had a few houses back then. The community was named after Henry Wetsel, an important businessman from nearby McKinney. He was also one of the first people to settle in that area.
Henry Wetsel's Contributions
Henry Wetsel sold his businesses in McKinney. Then, he claimed a large piece of land, about one square mile, south of the town. He had already built and operated an early grist and flour mill in McKinney. A grist mill is a place where grain is ground into flour.
He also built a small house, called a cottage, along the main travel route. This route was used by stagecoaches traveling between Austin and McKinney. Today, the area where Wetsel used to be is now part of the city of Allen.
Where is Wetsel?
Wetsel is located right inside the city limits of Allen. It is about 5 mi (8.0 km) southwest of McKinney. This area is in the southwestern part of Collin County.
Learning and Schools
Today, the children and teens in the Wetsel area go to schools in the Allen Independent School District. This school district serves the community. Students attend James and Margie Marion Elementary School, Walter & Lois Curtis Middle School, and Allen High School.
