A closer look at the whale sculpture

The Whale sculpture is about 9-foot (2.7 m) long. It stands in a place called Whale Park, which is also known as Hemlock Street Park. This park is at the north end of downtown Cannon Beach.

The sculpture helps us remember a special visit. In January 1806, members of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition came to this area. This group included William Clark and Sacagawea. They came to check out reports of a whale that had washed up on the beach.

The sculpture is 4 feet (1.2 m) tall, 3.5 feet (1.1 m) wide, and 10 feet (3.0 m) long. It lies flat on top of two metal poles. These poles are stuck into a concrete base that is 2 feet (0.61 m) tall. The whale's head and tail are lifted up, making it look like it's swimming.

The first sculpture was made from cedar wood. Later, it was replaced with a copy made of cast metal. This new version helps it last longer outside!

A Bit of History

In November 1993, experts said the original wooden Whale sculpture needed some care. It was looked after by the City of Cannon Beach.

The Whale sculpture has even been part of a travel guide. It was mentioned in a tour book called "Oregon's Coast, Mountains, Columbia River Gorge and Wine." This shows how important and well-known the sculpture is!
