The white-throated oxylabes (Oxylabes madagascariensis) is a special kind of passerine bird. Passerine birds are often called "songbirds." This bird lives only in Madagascar, which means it is endemic there. It is the only species in its group, called the Oxylabes genus.

This bird used to be part of the Old World warbler family. But now, scientists have moved it to a new family called Bernieridae. This family includes birds known as the Malagasy warblers. The white-throated oxylabes likes to live in warm, wet forests found in low areas.

About the White-Throated Oxylabes

The white-throated oxylabes is a fairly large warbler. It grows to be about 17 to 18 centimeters (around 7 inches) long. It has short wings but long legs, which help it move around. Its beak is also long and strong.

What Does It Look Like?

This bird has dark olive-brown feathers on its back. The top and sides of its head are a reddish-brown color. You can spot a narrow white stripe above its eye. Its chin and throat are also white, which is how it gets its name! The rest of its underside is dark brown. Both male and female birds look very similar.

Where Does It Live?

The white-throated oxylabes is found only on the island of Madagascar. It prefers to live in tropical and subtropical forests. These forests are usually moist and found in lowland areas. This type of habitat provides the perfect home for these unique birds.

Its Scientific Name History

The scientific name for this bird is Oxylabes madagascariensis. The word Oxylabes comes from an old Greek word. It means "quick at seizing," which might describe how the bird catches its food. This bird is considered monotypic, meaning there are no different types or subspecies of it.

In 2013, scientists discovered something interesting. They found that a bird called Bluntschli's vanga was actually the same species as the white-throated oxylabes. The Bluntschli's vanga had been described from two young birds. These young birds had a different brown color, which made them hard to identify at first.
