The Story of White Mountain Ice Cream Makers
How White Mountain Started
The White Mountain Freezer Company was started by a person named Thomas Sands. He began the company in the year 1872. It was located in a town called Laconia, New Hampshire.
In 1881, something unexpected happened: their factory was destroyed by a fire. After the fire, the company moved to a new place. They relocated to Nashua, New Hampshire. Their new factory was built right between the train tracks of two railroads: the Worcester & Nashua and the Nashua Acton railroads.
Moving and Rebuilding
Years later, in May 1930, another fire destroyed the factory in Nashua. But the company didn't give up! A brand new factory was built on Broad Street, also in Nashua.
In 1963, the White Mountain Freezer Company was sold. It was bought by another company called the Alaska Freezer Company. This company was located in Winchendon, Massachusetts.
New Owners Over Time
In 1974, a group of investors bought the company. This group was led by a person named William H. Potter, Jr. They decided to change the company's name to "White Mountain Freezer, Inc."
Later on, the company was bought by Berkshire Partners. Then, in 2005, it was sold again to a company called Jarden Corporation. In 2016, the Jarden Corporation joined together with another company called Newell Rubbermaid. After they merged, they changed their name to Newell Brands. This means that White Mountain Products is now part of Newell Brands.
