History of Whiteash
Whiteash started as a place where people mined coal. It grew around a mine owned by the Chicago and Marion Coal Company. Charles A. Gent, from nearby Marion, Illinois, started this company.
In 1903, Mr. Gent bought the land for the village. He bought it from Samuel K. Casey, who published a newspaper. Mr. Casey had inherited the land from his grandfather, George W. Binkley. George Binkley had first claimed the land from the government in 1837.
On July 3, 1903, Gent planned out the village. He named it Whiteash after the special name he used for the coal from his mine.
A post office opened in Whiteash on February 29, 1904. Robert T. Payne was the first postmaster. The people living there officially made Whiteash a village on June 16, 1905.
The coal mine worked until 1922. Then, it filled with water and was closed down. The post office stayed open for about ten more years. It finally closed on November 30, 1934. In 1960, only 160 people lived in Whiteash.
