Whitehall is a small place located in Andover Township, which is part of Sussex County, in the state of New Jersey, United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own separate local government. Instead, it's governed by the larger Andover Township.

Whitehall is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) south of the town of Andover. It's a quiet area with some interesting natural spots nearby.

Nature and Fun in Whitehall

Whitehall is surrounded by some cool natural features. On its east side, you'll find Panther Lake. This lake is a popular spot, and there's even a place called the Panther Lake Camping Resort right next to it. It's a great place for families to go camping and enjoy the outdoors.

To the west of Whitehall, you can find the northern part of Allamuchy Mountain State Park. This park is a large natural area perfect for hiking, biking, and exploring. It offers beautiful scenery and a chance to see local wildlife.

A Glimpse into Whitehall's Past

Whitehall has a bit of history, especially related to transportation. A long time ago, the Sussex Railroad used to run right through this area. Railroads were super important back then for moving people and goods.

In 1872, people noted that the biggest building in Whitehall was once a "tavern." A tavern was like an old-fashioned inn or hotel where travelers could stop to eat, drink, and rest. This particular tavern was a stopping point for "stages" – which were like horse-drawn buses – traveling between Newark and Oswego. Imagine how busy that spot must have been with travelers coming and going!
