Whitehern Historic House and Garden is a special old house in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. It was built a long time ago, just before the year 1850. Today, it is a historic house museum, which means you can visit it to learn about how people lived in the past.
This beautiful house was once the home of the McQuesten family. A very important member of this family was Thomas McQuesten. He was a well-known leader in Hamilton. After the last of his five brothers and sisters passed away in 1968, the family gave their historic home to the City of Hamilton.
Whitehern is located in downtown Hamilton. It sits on the corner of Jackson Street West and MacNab Street South. It is also very close to the Hamilton City Hall and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame museum.
Visiting Whitehern Museum
After being carefully fixed up, Whitehern opened as a museum in 1971. The City of Hamilton owns and runs it. Sometimes, the house is even used as a place to film movies or TV shows that are set in the past!
In 1962, Whitehern was named a National Historic Site. This means it is a very important place in Canada's history. There is also a special sign, called a provincial historical marker, put up by the Ontario Heritage Trust to remember Whitehern.
Who Was Thomas McQuesten?
Thomas McQuesten was one of many leaders in Hamilton who helped the city grow. He played a big part in convincing McMaster University to move from Toronto to west Hamilton in 1930. He also helped create the amazing Royal Botanical Gardens, which is a huge garden and nature area.
