Whitetop, Virginia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Whitetop is a small, special place in Grayson County, Virginia. It's not a big city, but it's famous for being the southern end point of a super cool path called the Virginia Creeper Trail. This area gets its name from the huge Whitetop Mountain nearby, which is one of the tallest mountains in Virginia! Whitetop is also close to where three states meet: North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Exploring Whitetop, Virginia

Whitetop is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's part of the larger county. People who live in Whitetop enjoy the quiet, natural beauty of the mountains.

The Virginia Creeper Trail

One of the most exciting things about Whitetop is its connection to the Virginia Creeper Trail. This famous trail is about 34 miles long and is very popular for biking, hiking, and horseback riding. It used to be a railroad line that carried timber and other goods through the mountains. Today, it's a beautiful path that winds through forests, over old train trestles, and alongside rivers. Whitetop marks the very end (or beginning, depending on how you look at it!) of this amazing trail.

Whitetop Mountain: A Tall Neighbor

Whitetop is named after Whitetop Mountain, which stands tall nearby. This mountain is a big deal because it's the second-tallest independent mountain in the entire state of Virginia! Only Mount Rogers is taller. Whitetop Mountain reaches high into the sky, offering amazing views and a home for lots of different plants and animals. Its name might come from the white snow that often covers its peak in winter, or from the white flowers that bloom there.

Where Three States Meet

Just about four miles northeast of Whitetop, you can find a special spot where the borders of three states come together. This point is known as the North Carolina–Tennessee–Virginia Corners. It's a unique place where you can technically be in three different states at the same time! This shows how Whitetop is located in a very interesting part of the country, right in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.
