Whitireia New Zealand is a school for older students in New Zealand. It used to be called Whitireia Community Polytechnic and Parumoana Community College. Its Māori name is Te Kura Matatini o Whitireia.

This school is owned and funded by the government. It helps students learn skills for jobs and further studies. Whitireia started in 1986 near Porirua Harbour. Today, about 7,500 students attend its different locations. You can find campuses in Auckland, Wellington, Petone, and Porirua.

A Look at Whitireia's History

Whitireia was first opened in 1986 in Porirua. It was initially known as Parumoana Community College. In 1989, its name changed to Whitireia Community Polytechnic. Then, in 2010, it became Whitireia New Zealand.

Later, Whitireia teamed up with the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec). They even shared a combined group of leaders. In 2018, Whitireia needed some financial help. The government gave them NZ$15 million to support the school. Soon after, the shared leadership group was replaced by a special commissioner.

On April 1, 2020, Whitireia joined a bigger group. It became part of the New Zealand Institute of Skills & Technology (NZIST). This change happened for all similar schools in New Zealand.

Who Led Whitireia?

Many people have helped lead Whitireia over the years. Dr Tūroa Royal was the first principal and CEO. He led the school from 1986 to 1996.

His deputy, Deirdre Dale, took over next. She was in charge from 1996 to 2006. Don Campbell then became CEO, leading the school from 2006 to 2015.

Chris Gosling became the CEO in 2015. He was in charge of both Whitireia and WelTec at the same time. Mark Oldershaw was set to become the new chief executive from April 1, 2020. This was the same day Whitireia joined NZIST.
