Whitman is a small, quiet place in Nelson County, North Dakota. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and buildings that is not officially a city or town. It does not have its own local government.
Whitman is located near a road called North Dakota Highway 35. It is also close to the Northern Plains Railroad tracks. You can find Whitman about 9.3 miles (15 km) north of Michigan. It is also about a thirty-minute drive east of Devils Lake.
A Look Back at Whitman's History
Whitman was started a long time ago, in 1912. This was when the Soo Line Railroad built its tracks through North Dakota. At one time, Whitman was a busy place. It had its own post office, a fire department, and even a lumber yard. There was also a community hall where people could gather. Kids went to school right there in Whitman.
Changes Over Time
In 1959, things changed for Whitman. Its school joined with the school in Michigan City, North Dakota. Because of this, Whitman's own school closed down.
By 2012, Whitman had become very small. Only two people were reported to be living there. Even so, hundreds of people came together in 2012 to celebrate Whitman's 100th birthday! It was a big party for a small place.

Even though Whitman is a very small community, it has a beautiful church. The Sarnia United Lutheran Church is located right in the center of town. It is very well cared for.
Another important church nearby is St. Catherine's Church of Lomice, North Dakota. This church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. This means it is recognized as a special historical site.
