The History of Whittaker

The area where Whittaker is now located was first known as Augusta Center. This changed around 1860 when a businessman named Frank Whittaker opened a general store. He had moved a few miles south from the community of Willis and set up his store near a railway line.

Early Development and Growth

Augusta Township was established much earlier, in 1836. In 1867, the township built its hall in this growing area. Soon, more buildings appeared, including a hotel, several stores, blacksmith shops, and even a creamery. The community grew and was named after Frank Whittaker.

The Arrival of the Railroad

In 1880, Whittaker got its own train station on the Wabash Railroad. This was a big deal! It made it easy to send goods like lumber directly to Detroit. This helped the community's economy grow even more.

Whittaker's Post Office History

The community of Whittaker received its first post office on January 9, 1882. William Bishop was the first postmaster. The post office has been open ever since. Today, the post office is located at 11014 Whittaker Road. It uses the 48190 ZIP Code, mainly for post office box services. Other nearby areas use different ZIP Codes, like Milan (48160) to the west, Ypsilanti (48197) to the north, and Willis (48191) to the east and south.

Current Railway Operations

The single railway line still runs through Whittaker. It is now operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway. However, there is no longer a train station in the area for people to use.
