Wiñaymarka Lake (also known as Huiñaymarca) is the southern part of Lake Titicaca. It is located in both Bolivia and Peru. Think of it as a smaller, connected section of the much larger Lake Titicaca.

What is Wiñaymarka Lake?

Wiñaymarka Lake is not a separate lake. It is actually the southern and shallower part of Lake Titicaca. A narrow strait, or channel, connects it to the main body of Lake Titicaca. This strait is called the Strait of Tiquina.

Where is this Lake Located?

Wiñaymarka Lake is found high up in the Andes Mountains of South America. It sits on the border between two countries:

This means that parts of the lake are in Bolivia, and other parts are in Peru. It is a very high-altitude lake, meaning it is located far above sea level.

About Lake Titicaca

Since Wiñaymarka is part of Lake Titicaca, it's good to know a bit about the main lake. Lake Titicaca is famous for a few reasons:

  • It is the largest lake in South America by water volume.
  • It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world. This means large boats can travel on it, even though it's very high up.
  • The lake is very important to the local people. They use it for fishing, transport, and farming on its shores.

Unique Features of the Lake

The area around Wiñaymarka and Lake Titicaca is quite special. The high altitude means the air is thinner, and the climate can be cool. Despite this, many types of plants and animals live there. The lake's waters are home to unique fish species. Birds also live along its shores.

The lake's water comes from rain and melting glaciers from the surrounding mountains. It is a vital source of water for the communities living nearby.
