The Wianno Club is a historic club located at 107 Sea View Avenue in Osterville, Massachusetts. It began as a hotel called the Cotocheset House. This building was constructed in 1882. It replaced a larger hotel that had burned down in 1881. The original hotel was a big part of a fancy resort area. This area was developed for wealthy people before World War I. In 1916, a new club bought the hotel property.
A Club with History
The Wianno Club building is a great example of Shingle style architecture. This style uses wooden shingles on the walls and roofs. It often has many different shapes and porches. The club's main building is large and has three stories. It features many cross gables and projecting parts. These are common for the Shingle style.
Golf Course Development
The club first built a nine-hole golf course. This course is now part of holes 13-18. The 16th hole was actually the first one built. A house near this hole was the original clubhouse. More land was bought later, in 1919. A famous golf course designer, Donald Ross, was then hired. He redesigned the first nine holes. He also created a whole new nine holes for the club.
A Special Landmark
The main clubhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it is a very important historical building. It is one of the few 19th-century hotel buildings still standing. The clubhouse is also the main part of the Wianno Historic District. After the club took over, a new wing was added. A Colonial Revival style porch was also added in the 1920s. The inside of the building still has many original details. The club also uses the nearby Tiffany Cottage as a guest house. A very important person, Charles Evans Hughes, died there. He used to be the chief justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. This means he was the main judge for the highest court in the country.
