The Wianno Historic District is a special area in Osterville, Massachusetts, which is part of Barnstable, Massachusetts. It's like a time capsule of a fancy summer vacation spot from the late 1800s. Wealthy families used to come here to relax.

The main building in the district is the Wianno Club. It was built in 1881 where an older hotel used to be. This area, about 40 acres (16 hectares) big, has many beautiful old houses. These homes are built in unique styles called Shingle style and Colonial Revival. The Wianno Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.

What is the Wianno Historic District?

The Wianno area is located on the southern coast of Cape Cod. It includes many properties right on the water along Sea View Avenue. The district also stretches a bit along Wianno Avenue.

The Wianno Club: A Central Spot

The Wianno Club is a very important building here. It was designed by an architect named Horace Frazer. It was built in 1881 to replace an older hotel called the Cotocheset House, which had burned down.

Wealthy people from Boston and New York City planned this summer community in the 1870s. They bought most of the land, built the hotel, and then sold smaller pieces of land for summer homes.

The Summer "Cottages"

The houses built here were called "cottages," but they were actually large, beautiful homes. Most of them are two stories tall and made of wood. Many are built in the Shingle style. This style often features rambling shapes and roofs with many angles. They also have porches and interesting windows. These houses are usually on large lots, often an acre or more.

Famous Houses in the District

One cool example is the Calvin Prescott House, built in 1882-1883. It's a 2.5-story house with a unique roof and a round tower on the corner.

Another interesting home is the Isobel Richards House. It has some Queen Anne style features. This property also has a windmill, which is pretty neat! There are a few windmills in the district. The Tiffany House, built in 1879, is now a guest house for the Wianno Club. It was built for a family member of the famous artist Louis Comfort Tiffany.
