Wigberto "Ka Bobby" Ebarle Tañada Sr. (born August 13, 1934) is a Filipino politician. He is a member of the Liberal Party. He served as a Senator of the Philippines from 1987 to 1995. Later, he was a member of the Philippine House of Representatives for Quezon's 4th District from 1995 to 2001. He is the son of the famous former senator, Lorenzo M. Tañada.
Early Life and Education
Wigberto Tañada went to Quezon Elementary School and Gumaca Central School. He also studied at St. John's Academy. He finished his elementary and high school education at Ateneo de Manila University in 1948.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ateneo de Manila University in 1952. In 1956, he received his Bachelor of Laws degree from Manuel L. Quezon University. He then passed the bar exams to become a lawyer. He also earned a Master of Laws degree from Harvard Law School in the United States. His father taught him to be smart with money, even sending gifts from abroad to his dorm.
Political Journey
On March 7, 1986, Wigberto Tañada was appointed as the Commissioner of the Bureau of Customs. This is a government office that handles goods coming into and leaving the country.
He successfully ran for senator in 1987 under the LABAN coalition. In the same year, he became a member of the Judicial Bar Council. This council helps choose judges and court officials.
In 1991, he became famous as a leader of the "Magnificent 12." This was a group of 12 senators who voted against a new agreement for the Subic Bay Naval Base. This decision meant the United States military base had to leave the Philippines.
In 1992, he ran for senator again and won. He was the only Liberal Party candidate to win in that election. In 1993, he became the president of the Liberal Party.
After his time as a senator ended in 1995, he was elected as a member of the Philippine House of Representatives. He represented the 4th District of Quezon. He was re-elected in 1998. In 2001, he ran for senator one more time but did not win. In 1999, he received the TOFIL Award for his excellent work in government and public service.
