Serving His Country
During the First World War, Wilf Nixon joined the army. He was part of a special group called the Football Battalion. This battalion was made up of many footballers who decided to serve their country.
Wilf was a soldier in the Middlesex Regiment. In April 1917, while fighting in a place called Oppy, he was captured by the German soldiers. This meant he became a prisoner of war (POW). He was held by the Germans until the war ended.
