Playing for Clubs
Wilfried Hannes was born in Düren-Echtz, which was in West Germany at the time. He started out as a striker, a player who scores goals. But in his professional career, he became a defender.
Time at Borussia Mönchengladbach
Wilfried Hannes joined Borussia Mönchengladbach in 1975. This was a very successful time for the club. They won the Bundesliga Championship and the UEFA Cup that year.
He quickly became a favorite player among the fans. He was a very important part of the team. With his help, Borussia Mönchengladbach won two more German Bundesliga titles in 1976 and 1977. They also won the UEFA Cup again in 1979.
He helped his team reach the finals of other big tournaments too. They were runners-up in the European Cup in 1977. They also finished second in the UEFA Cup in 1980 and the German Cup in 1984.
Wilfried's Playing Style
Wilfried Hannes played as a sweeper. This is a special kind of defender who plays behind the main defensive line. He was known for running forward with the ball. He also had powerful long-distance shots, and many of them turned into goals!
He was also very good at heading the ball. His record shows how skilled he was. He scored 58 goals in 261 games for Borussia Mönchengladbach. This is a lot of goals for a defender!
Playing for His Country
Wilfried Hannes also played for the West Germany national team. His international career lasted about one year in the early 1980s. During this time, he played in eight international matches. These matches are called "caps."
Three of his caps were in the qualification games for the 1982 FIFA World Cup. He was part of the West Germany team that went to the 1982 FIFA World Cup. His team finished as runners-up in the tournament. However, Wilfried Hannes did not get to play in any of the matches during the World Cup itself.
Some people wondered why he only played eight times for his country. It was mostly because there was a very strong defensive partnership at the time. Two brothers, the Förster brothers, were playing together in defense. This made it hard for other defenders to get a spot.
Lothar Matthäus, another famous German footballer, once said something special about Wilfried Hannes. Matthäus said that he learned a lot from Wilfried Hannes. This was when they played together at Borussia Mönchengladbach early in Matthäus's career.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Wilfried Hannes became a football manager. He coached several teams. One of the clubs he managed was Alemannia Aachen from 1991 to 1994. He also coached other teams, including SC Borussia 1912 Freialdenhoven in the fifth division.
