Life of Wilhelm Camphausen
Becoming a Painter
Wilhelm Camphausen studied painting with famous teachers like Alfred Rethel and Friedrich Wilhelm Schadow. He quickly became very popular for his exciting paintings of history and battles. In 1859, he was made a professor of painting at the Düsseldorf Academy. This was a very important job!
Famous Artworks
Some of his most well-known early paintings include Flight of Tilly (from 1841) and Prince Eugene of Savoy at the Battle of Belgrade (from 1843). You can see the Battle of Belgrade painting in the Cologne Museum. He also painted Flight of Charles II after the Battle of Worcester (which is in the Berlin National Gallery) and Cromwell's Cavalry (in the Munich Pinakothek).
Later, he painted Frederick the Great at Potsdam and Frederick II and the Bayreuth Dragoons at Hohenfriedburg. His art is part of what is known as the Düsseldorf school of painting.
War Artist
In 1864, Wilhelm Camphausen joined the Prussian army during the Schleswig-Holstein war. He painted many scenes from the fighting. He also painted scenes from the War of 1866, like Lines of Dybbøl after the Battle, which is in the Berlin National Gallery. These paintings made him famous in Germany as an artist who showed patriotic history.
He also painted many portraits of German princes, brave soldiers, and important politicians. During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, Camphausen worked for the German army as an official war artist. This meant he painted what was happening during the war.
