The Life of Wilhelm Wackenroder
Wilhelm Wackenroder was born in the city of Berlin. From a young age, he became a very close friend of Ludwig Tieck. They were so close that they worked together on almost everything they wrote.
Working with Ludwig Tieck
Wilhelm and Ludwig often shared ideas for their books. Wilhelm likely helped a lot with Tieck's novel called Franz Sternbalds Wanderungen. This title means Franz Sternbald’s Wanderings (published in 1798). In return, Tieck probably helped Wilhelm with his own important book.
His Famous Book: Outpourings of an Art-Loving Friar
Wilhelm Wackenroder's most famous work was a collection of essays. It was titled Herzensergießungen eines kunstliebenden Klosterbruders, which translates to Outpourings of an Art-Loving Friar. This book came out in 1797.
The Outpourings celebrated art and literature from the Renaissance and Middle Ages. Wackenroder and Tieck felt that the art of their time, during the Age of Enlightenment, sometimes lacked deep emotion. They believed older art had more feeling.
This book was also important because it said that art from the Northern Renaissance (like in Germany) was just as good as art from the Italian Renaissance. He especially praised the artist Albrecht Dürer. In Germany, Outpourings is seen as one of the very first works of the Romantic movement. It had a similar impact to how Lyrical Ballads influenced the Romantic movement in England.
His Early Death
Sadly, Wilhelm Wackenroder died very young. He passed away in Berlin in 1798. He was only 24 years old when he died from typhoid fever.
