Early Life and Studies
Wilhelm Vischer began his studies by learning about medicine in Geneva and Basel. Later, he switched to studying natural sciences in Munich, Germany. In 1914, he earned his PhD there. A PhD is a very high university degree that shows someone is an expert in their field.
While in Munich, he learned from a famous botanist named Karl Ritter von Goebel.
Adventures and Discoveries
After finishing his studies, Wilhelm Vischer went on an exciting trip. He joined Robert Hippolyte Chodat on a botanical adventure to Paraguay. They explored the country and collected many different kinds of plants.
When he returned to Switzerland, he spent several years in Geneva. From 1914 to 1919, he carefully studied the plants they had collected in Paraguay.
Working as a Botanist
In 1919, Wilhelm Vischer moved to Java, an island in Indonesia. He worked as a botanist at a special research station there. This station focused on studying rubber plants.
Later, in 1924, he returned to Switzerland. He became a lecturer at the University of Basel. A lecturer is a teacher at a university. From 1928 until 1960, he worked as a professor of botany at the same university. He taught students all about plants.
A Special Honor
Wilhelm Vischer's work was very important in the world of botany. In 1937, another scientist named Adolf Pascher honored him. Pascher named a new group of algae Vischeria after him. This was a great way to recognize Vischer's contributions to science.
