Will the Real Jerry Lewis Please Sit Down was a 1970 animated TV show. It featured many cartoon versions of the famous comedian Jerry Lewis. These characters were based on his 1965 movie The Family Jewels. The show was similar to other cartoons like Archie's TV Funnies and the Groovie Goolies.
The show's title was a funny twist on a famous game show question. On To Tell the Truth, they would ask, "Will the real __________ please stand up?" Like many cartoons from the 1970s, this show used a laugh track. This is a sound effect that makes it seem like an audience is laughing.
Even though Jerry Lewis helped write some of the stories, he did not do any of the voices. The main character, Jerry Lewis, was voiced by David Lander. You might know David Lander better as Squiggy from the TV show Laverne & Shirley.
About the Show
What's It About?
The show was made by Filmation, a company known for its funny cartoons. They filled the episodes with lots of slapstick humor. Slapstick means silly, over-the-top physical comedy, like someone slipping on a banana peel. The cartoon version of Jerry Lewis was very stretchy and clumsy. He looked a lot like how he was drawn in the DC Comics comic book, The Adventures of Jerry Lewis.
The show had many funny characters who appeared often. These included:
- Hong Kong Flewis, a Chinese detective, and his big son, One Ton Son.
- Professor Lewis, Jerry's father.
- Geraldine, Jerry's sister, and her pet frog, Spot.
The show seemed to take place in the New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut area. In one episode, Jerry saw a road sign that said "Atlantic City. 216 miles."
Jerry's Job Adventures
In the series, Jerry worked for the Odd Job Employment Agency. His boss was a grumpy man named Mr. Blunderpuss. In a typical episode, Jerry would get a new job. He would then accidentally mess it up in a harmless, clumsy way.
The show's opening and commercial breaks were very wild and fun. The theme song was sung in a fast, catchy "bubblegum" style. Before the song ended, an announcer would interrupt. He would scold, "Will the real Jerry Lewis please sit down!" The show also had some characters that used old-fashioned stereotypes, especially for Asian characters.
This show was one of the first from Filmation to use a special "wheel" credit for its creators, Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott. Before this, their names were just listed one above the other. It was also the first Filmation show to show director Hal Sutherland's name in a fancy writing style.
Who Were the Voices?
The talented actors who brought the characters to life were:
- David Lander as Jerry Lewis.
- Howard Morris as Mr. Blunderpuss, Ralph Rotten Lewis, Professor Lewis, One Ton Son, Hong Kong Flewis, Uncle Seadog, and many other voices.
- Jane Webb as Geraldine Lewis and Rhonda, Jerry's girlfriend.
