Willard Brook State Forest is a beautiful natural area in Massachusetts. It is located in the towns of Ashby and Townsend. This forest is open to the public and offers many fun things to do outdoors.

The forest gets its name from a fast-moving stream called Willard Brook. The trees here look like those found in the western parts of Massachusetts. This gives the forest a unique feel. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation takes care of the forest.

Forest History: How It Began

Willard Brook State Forest was created in 1930. The state bought the land to protect it and allow people to enjoy nature.

During the 1930s and 1940s, a group called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) helped improve many parks. The CCC was a program for young men during a tough economic time. Even though there wasn't a CCC camp right in this forest, workers from nearby camps came here. From 1933 to 1940, they built new features for visitors. They worked on areas like Damon Pond and Trap Brook Falls.
