Early Life and Family

William's father was named Freskin. Freskin came from Flanders, a region that is now part of Belgium and the Netherlands. He moved to Scotland when King David I was ruling the country. William was Freskin's oldest son.

Lands and Power

William became a powerful landowner in Scotland. Between the years 1165 and 1171, he received special permission from King William I of Scotland to own many lands. These lands included Strathbrock in West Lothian. He also gained control of Duffus, Roseisle, Inchkeil, Machir, and Kintrae in the area called Moray. Owning these lands made William a very important person in medieval Scotland.
