William Ambrose Wright (born January 19, 1844 – died September 13, 1929) was an important person in Georgia's history. He served as a soldier and later worked for the state government for a very long time. He was known for being the state's comptroller and insurance commissioner for fifty years!

Early Life and War Service

When he was young, William Ambrose Wright joined the Confederate States Army in 1860. This was just before the Civil War began. During the war, he was a lieutenant, which is a junior officer. He was hurt during a big battle called the Second Battle of Bull Run. After being injured, he was captured and held as a prisoner. He was kept at a place called Johnson's Island from June 1863 until May 1864.

A Long Career in Government

After the war, William Ambrose Wright started a long career in public service. On September 17, 1879, he was chosen by Governor Alfred H. Colquitt to be the comptroller general of Georgia. A comptroller general is like a chief financial officer for the state. They help manage the state's money and make sure everything is handled correctly.

William Ambrose Wright held this important job for a very long time. He stayed in office for fifty years! He continued to serve the people of Georgia until he passed away in Atlanta on September 13, 1929. He was buried at Oakland Cemetery.
