What Did William Bailie Do?
In 1610, William Bailie received a large piece of land in Ireland. This was part of a big plan called the Ulster Plantation. The plan was to settle Scottish and English families in Ulster, a province in Ireland.
Building Bailieborough Castle
William Bailie received about 1,000 acres of land in a place called Toneregie, which is now known as Tandragee. This land was in County Cavan. On this land, he built a strong house called Bailieborough Castle.
Founding a New Town
After building his castle, William Bailie brought many Scottish families to live in the area. He is seen as the founder of the town of Bailieborough. However, the town as we know it today really grew much later, in the 1800s. This happened when Colonel William Young owned the estate.

William Bailie had two sons named William and Robert.
His Eldest Son, William
His oldest son, also named William Bailie, became a very important church leader. He was a Bishop of Clonfert and Kilmacduagh. When his father passed away, this son inherited the family's land and castle.
The Family Estate
William Bailie's estate later passed to his only daughter, Jane. From her, the estate became part of the Hamilton family.
