William de Beauchamp, 1st Baron Bergavenny (about 1343 – 8 May 1411) was an important English nobleman. He was also a Knight of the Garter, which was a very special honor given by the King.
William was the fourth son of Thomas Beauchamp, 11th Earl of Warwick and Katherine Mortimer. He served as a soldier under Sir John Chandos during the Hundred Years' War. This was a long conflict between England and France. In 1376, he was made a Knight of the Garter.
William's Role in Government
Sir William Beauchamp worked for King Richard II. He was part of the King's special group of advisors called the royal council. From 1378 to 1380, he served as a high-ranking official in the King's household. He was also in charge of Calais, an important English town in France, in 1383.
Becoming Baron Bergavenny
In 1389, William inherited the important area of Abergavenny, including Abergavenny Castle. This happened after his cousin, John Hastings, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, passed away.
On 23 July 1392, William was officially called to join the Parliament. This is how he became known as Baron Bergavenny. In 1399, he was given more important jobs. He became a judge in South Wales and the leader of Pembroke.
William made sure that Abergavenny Castle and its lands would stay in his family. After he died in 1411, his wife continued to live there until her death in 1435. William was buried at Black Friars in Hereford.
