Early Life and Family Connections
William Borthwick was the son of William Borthwick, 2nd Lord Borthwick, who died around 1483. Interestingly, William was made a knight before his father. This was a special honor!
As a young knight, Sir William de Borthwick, he sometimes helped his father with legal matters. For example, on July 4, 1476, he was involved in a case about money his father owed. The decision in that case went against them. However, they appeared together again on October 16, 1479, and this time, the decision was in their favor.
A Diplomat for Scotland
Sir William Borthwick played an important role in Scotland's relationships with other countries, especially England. He was one of the people who promised that a peace agreement with England would be kept. This agreement was made on September 20, 1484.
He also helped make sure other important agreements, called treaties, were followed. He was a "Conservator" for treaties signed on March 26, 1494, September 30, 1497, and July 12, 1499. This shows he was trusted to help keep the peace and good relations between Scotland and its neighbors.
Land and Legacy
As Lord Borthwick, William was the main owner of lands in a place called Nenthorn, in Berwickshire. On June 27, 1495, he officially gave some of these lands to his second son, Alexander Borthwick. This happened after the person who had been using the land before, James Wilson, gave it up.
Lord Borthwick passed away on May 20, 1503. After his death, his oldest son, William Borthwick, 4th Lord Borthwick, took over his title and lands.
Sir William also had two daughters:
- His daughter, Agnes Borthwick, married David Kennedy, 1st Earl of Cassilis.
- His other daughter, Catherine Borthwick, married William Cunningham, 4th Earl of Glencairn.
