Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Bourke, 8th Baron Bourke of Connell (died around 1691) was an Irish nobleman who supported King James II.

William Bourke became the 8th Baron Bourke of Connell in 1680, inheriting the title from his father, Thomas Bourke. His mother was Margaret Hore. King James II appointed him to important roles, making him the Lord Lieutenant of Limerick and the Lord Lieutenant of the City of Limerick. These roles were like being a special representative of the king in those areas.

William Bourke's Role in the Williamite War

During the Williamite War in Ireland, William Bourke played an active part. King James II called a special meeting of the Irish House of Lords in 1689, known as the Patriot Parliament. William Bourke was asked to attend this meeting.

Military Service and Key Battles

William Bourke also served in the army. He started as a captain in the Earl of Tyrone's regiment of foot soldiers. Later, he became a lieutenant colonel in Sutherland's regiment of horse, which means he was a high-ranking officer in a cavalry unit. He bravely fought in the important Battle of Aughrim in 1691.

Life After the War

After the Jacobite forces lost the war, William Bourke chose to follow King James II into exile in France. The English government then took away his title and lands. This process is called being "attainted." William Bourke passed away in France, and not much is known about his life there.
