Kids Encyclopedia Facts

William Bryant (born January 11, 1730 – died around 1783) was a physician and a historian who loved old things (an antiquary).

William Bryant was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. His father was a busy sea captain. William studied medicine and worked as a doctor in New York. In 1769, he moved to Trenton.

A Doctor and a Thinker

In Trenton, William Bryant became a well-known and successful doctor. He joined groups of smart people who liked to learn and discuss ideas. In 1774, he gave a talk to the American Philosophical Society. His talk was about an electric eel from a place called Surinam. That same year, he was chosen to be a member of this important group.

During the Revolutionary War

During the Revolutionary War, Dr. Bryant helped both American and German soldiers who were fighting. He lived at a place called Bloomsbury Court. However, his neighbors made him leave. This was because he supported the British side (Loyalists) during the war. After he left, Bryant gave his home to Colonel John Cox. The property then became a place where George Washington's army stored supplies.
